Tiny, illustrated newsteam
Roaming through my local bookstore the other day, as I often do, I took a turn into the childrens' books.
I ran across some books by author, David Shannon, who I had recently heard about on the radio. I flipped through a couple of his books, enjoying the stories and admiring the illustration when I came across a small paperback book he wrote called A Bad Case of Stripes.
I flipped through the pages and halfway through I saw this:

Live trucks, cameras, mic flags, photogs in plaid, dumbfounded reporters... It's awesome!
If you look closely you can see a news helicopter, protesters, cops, and hippies. Everyone is hanging out on the lawn while the poor family peers out the window.
My favorite part is the three-person crew knocking on the door.

I love that the reporter is drawn in a skirt and jacket while the sound guy has on jeans and a ball cap. I'd say that Mr. Shannon did his homework, but right in between them stands a sketched photog carrying his camera on the wrong shoulder. No matter, I'm simply glad that someone is teaching the next generation all about the media circus!
So cool!

Very cool. I did meet a guy from overseas many years ago who had converted his betacam to work off his left shoulder. It was quite unusual and looked a bitch to work. Somehow he worked the switches much like reading braile. I never took a photo but then we never had digi cameras either.
I also assume looking at that drawing that the sound guy is not using a link as there are no arials nor a mixer!
You shouldn't use the word "circus". I got an inter-station email the other day from a higher up stating that we are confusing the viewer by using words like "circus" and "frezy" when describing media involvement on a major story. He said, "are there clowns, elephants, and arcobats at the sceen?" I agreed. There are not clowns, elephants, lion tamers, bearded women, and other cool circus attractions in the field!
Now if there was......that would be cool. Could you imagine that at a press conference if there was a juggling clown standing next to the speaker. Sweet!
I say the clowns are the reporters with painted faces. Arcobats are the photogs having to climb on top of live trucks to get a shot. The elephants are the endless row of live trucks parked front to tail along the street. The lion tamers would be the police doing crowd control. I'd say most male reporters would qualify as bearded women. I'm totally not confused we some calls a story a media "Circus".
