sweeps

I was recently reassigned to the investigative unit at work. My cheif, who usually handles all their stories, has been the interim shooter and producer for the sports shows while a new person is found and trained. He hasn't time for anything else, so for 3 days a week, I investigate.

This is a new world that I can't quite grasp.

Stories don't turn.
Something I shot last week gets written this week and I edit it next week.

It's not a constant race out the door.
I don't even care that it's five minutes to five.

I have no clue what's happening in the news.

My tapes don't sit in drawers waiting to get back into action.
Nope. 6 tapes are on her desk. another 5 on hers... I think he has 3... and she has 4.

I'm inundated in tapes and scripts

and sit in a small red lit room all day.

Tapping at a colorful keyboard

and staring at lines and bars on a computer screen.

A full 8 hour shift and I don't shoot any tape.
A full 8 hour shift and I don't leave the building.
A full 8 hour shift...

In a tiny, red box.

You're right, Smitty.
It is better than 3 live shots.

But, I don't know how the deskies and producers do it with the never leaving the freakin' newsroom...
